You know it, you love it. And if you don‘t know it, you just haven‘t experienced one of the best trail networks in northern Michigan... Game plan is to do a hot lap of the Outer Loop, including Never Never Land - am thinking clockwise this time - from the trailhead off of Eckerdt Rd. 20-ish miles, plus or minus. Sure you can go shorter, but why would you? Supposed to be a really nice day (just like the last half dozen of my attempts that the weatherpersons goofed up)! Route suggestions (for reference): https://glacialhillstrails.org/trail-routes-1

We‘ll save this one for another day. Not a lot of response for this time around, and I‘ve already ridden it solo a couple of times. Will try it again later this year if there‘s interest... Although there‘s a little over a mile in Segment 7 still closed for restoration after the heavy rains last month, the vast majority of the ~45 mile loop is open. Be sure to check the "Michigan‘s Dragon at Hardy Dam" Facebook updates for the latest info... We‘ll park at Newaygo State Park - because it offers free parking if you have a Recreation Pass on your license plate. From there, the plan is to ride clockwise around Hardy Pond at a decent clip. For those not wanting to do the full loop, an easier/shorter option would be to ride to the north end along the east side of Hardy Pond, through Segments 3/4/5 and back down again - yielding a fast and flowy 30-ish mile route. It‘s about a 100 mile drive down there (just below Big Rapids), so plan accordingly... I‘ve ridden this trail twice so far, and IMO it‘s the most entertaining network in lower Michigan and not to be missed! Be sure to bring extra water and snacks - the full loop will likely take 4 hrs minimum... https://www.michigan.gov/recsearch/parks/newaygo https://www.thedragon.us/the-dragon-trail/trail-conditions/

This week‘s ride seeks to explore some of the rideable gravel in and around the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Roughly 60/40 gravel to paved, this route loops around some of the fancy resorts on Prospect Hill before taking the SBHT to loop up and around Pyramid Point. We‘ll return down South Wheeler Rd (and if you feel up to it you can take quick hot lap around Ursa Minor/Major at Palmer Woods!) back to the park in time for the picnic. There are a few climbs (check the RwGPS link for elevation profile), but we‘ll stop and regroup periodically as this is a NO DROP ride...

A longer option for the first day of riding in Door County, WI. We‘ll plan on stopping at Mauricio‘s Mexican Restaurant (~mile 42) in Sturgeon Bay for lunch, and be back in time for happy hour. An "A" ride due to length, we‘ll take plenty of breaks and regroup to ensure nobody gets separated. We‘ll follow the coast southbound, with a hillier return up the middle of the peninsula. There should be lots of photo ops along the way (especially in Patowatomi State Park) so the pace will be modest but purposeful (expecting 14-16 mph when rolling).

New for 2026 is a regular gravel/adventure series, 2-3 times a month on Sunday mornings. Routes will vary from introductory to "spicy", generally running from 15 to 50 miles in length. Terrain will consist of a mix of mostly dirt/gravel, minimal tarmac connecting roads, and occasional sandy sections or singletrack. RwGPS navigation files will be provided for each ride... Join me as we explore some relatively new territory southwest of TC. This route straddles the definitions between "A" rides and "Gravel". Certainly a bit longer, we‘ll plan on stopping for lunch (or at least a long break) in Kaleva. Another 50/50 mix of gravel & paved surfaces, there do not appear to be any overly technical sections, so this week warrants an 8 on the 1 to 10 difficulty scale primarily due to length. Be sure to bring an extra water bottle...

New for 2026 is an evening ride series conducted in partnership with the Hagerty Cycling Team. This ride will be held weekly starting at 6:30 pm out of East Bay Park and will generally follow the classic 41 mile Old Mission Peninsula loop to the lighthouse and back at a targeted pace of 20 mph. As an “A” level ride focusing on paceline group riding and race conditioning, this will be limited to acoustic bicycles only (no e-Bikes).
