Join us February 27th for a CCCC Curling Event
This is an event not to be missed! We have three sheets of ice reserved for a total of 24 participants, eight on each ice at the TC Curling Club. Those who prefer to observe are welcomed as well. We have some seasoned Curlers, who are also members of the Curling Club that will serve as instructors for the evening. Thank you in advance to Mike Schaeffer, Mike Shomin and Steve Deude!
We have a room reserved from 5:00-6:00 PM for dinner. There will be a charge for those who Curl and those who just observe. Each fee will include dinner and one drink ticket. Additional alcoholic drinks may be purchased with EXACT change of $6.50 each. Alcohol must be purchased at the Center as no alcohol can be brought in.
Below find a great introduction to Curling provided by Mike Schaeffer.
The Sport of Curling:
This 2-minute video gives a quick description of what the game is all about. Click here to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOk9SVzqHsk
After watching this, the game might make some sense. Especially if you watch the Olympics in February.
Here is another video that will give an idea of what we will be teaching you on the ice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miB7HzUvmM0
Clothing:
Footwear: Bring a pair of clean tennies to wear on the ice. You can change out of your outdoor shoes just inside the doors to the lobby. Any dirt brought in from outside finds its way onto the carpet and eventually onto the ice. We want to keep our ice clean. Before we go out onto the ice, you will be given grippers for each foot. The grippers are like rubber galoshes that are textured on the bottom to provide traction on the ice.
Other Clothing: We maintain a temperature of 45 degrees in the cold room, and you will be active on the ice. You should wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move around. My best suggestion is bike clothing that you would wear for a ride when the temperature is 45 degrees. Avoid cotton or fabrics that carry lint and dirt onto the ice. If you are unsure how heavy to dress, dress in layers. You might want a hat and gloves also.
Dinner:
Dinner will be in the warm room from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM. The Club will provide dinner and soft drinks and one drink ticket per person.
Arrival Time:
With dinner being before our ice time, you should be able to get there in plenty of time. If you can't make it in time for dinner, I would suggest that everyone try to arrive about 15 minutes prior to our ice time that begins at 6:00. This will give everyone time to change shoes, sign a release, and get fitted for grippers. Since we have the ice for only two hours, we would like to spend as much time on the ice as possible.
What We'll Do:
Before heading onto the ice, we will give a short safety briefing. Ice can provide a hard landing if you fall (ask me how I know this). After everyone signs the release and gets grippers and a broom, we will go onto the ice.
We will have three sheets of ice. Each sheet can handle up to eight participants plus one instructor. We will give some very basic instruction on throwing the rocks, sweeping, and how the game is run. After about half an hour of basic instruction, we will get to the fun part of the night. We will split into teams of four and play a short four on four game for the remainder of our ice time.
Hopefully having this information in advance will lead to a more enjoyable experience. Maybe you'll enjoy the sport enough to want to join TCCC and compete in one of our leagues. That's what happened to me seven years ago. It's more fun than riding an exercise bike in the winter.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on February 27.
